Quote:
Selby Jr. dropped out of school at the age of 15, to work in the city docks, before becoming a merchant seaman in 1947.[1] That year, while at sea, Selby Jr. was diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis ("TB") due to the cows on board, which had bovine tuberculosis; doctors predicted that he would live less than a year[citation needed].

He was taken off the ship in Bremen, Germany, and sent back to the United States. For the next three and a half years, Selby was in and out of the U.S. Public Health Hospital (part of a system of hospitals originally established to care for merchant seamen)[2] in New York for treatment. Antibiotics had not been available and TB was widespread.

There is usually a reasonable justification.

I left the house for the first time today (well, a couple of times I left to run the car, but that was in a bubble so don't think it counts).

Went for a walk around some old railway lines and had a picnic in the grounds of the church. Graveyard camped.

Default I can't talk to my mother so I talk to my diary

Neighbor's father just died from it along with other complications few days back. Trump supporter. Called every liberal he saw a snowflake, probably even while being admitted. Wish he had more time to work on those insults. Was like listening to Cotton from King of the Hill. Oddly enough, it snowed here on/around the time of his passing. Wonder if he saw it from his hospital window and if he thought the snow was a hallucinatory side effect of the drugs, it being the middle of May and all. Fucking snowflakes. Confirmed cases remain low in the surrounding area, at least in terms of hospitalizations and deaths, but both have been steadily on the rise. Nevertheless, CNY is reopening as the numbers are well below the threshold.

Yesterday I rediscovered a social media influencer who (over/mis)uses the word "literally" on youtube and twitter. Five plus years of her recording herself saying literally more than Croco. And yet, if not for Croco, I wouldn't have learned that toothpaste can indeed be syringed back into its tube. Added onto the same webpage with that info, a seemingly unrelated poem by Yeats. Checking for it on Wikipedia produced the following information on its historical context...

Quote:
The poem is also connected to the 1918–1919 flu pandemic. In the weeks preceding Yeats' writing of the poem, his pregnant wife caught the virus and was very close to death. The highest death rates of the pandemic were among pregnant women—in some areas, they had up to a 70 percent death rate.
One whole century ago. Carlin may be rolling around in his grave, but hopefully it's not without some laughter. Time to scratch another tally into the wall.
