There are free champions to play every week (they rotate). You earn in-game currency to purchase new champions as you play/win/lose matches. You don't have to drop a dime on this game if you're not an impatient butt.

I'll have to give it a try then. I play SMITE with a co-worker occasionally but that's pretty much it for these kind of games. Sounds like LoL is like SMITE in that aspect, minus the third person camera.
