I personally think it is absolutely foolish for USAID to think that trying some media-based mass psychological manipulation to change attitudes in LGBT-unfriendly places is a better use for that money than simply using it to protect, up to and including getting the hell out of there, actual citizens of that country who are LGBT and suffering as a result

To some extent I agree, especially when working with your own citizens. I am all about things like getting to them as kids and changing what they idolize or value to create some positive long term outcome

But now we’re taking the concept and applying it in a piddly amount in countries that have authority figures actively conditioning against it? You’ll have about as much luck changing hearts and minds with that as you would arguing over a US news articles comment section lol

I mean, Dems had the entire apparatus of Hollywood, gov’t admin, the music industry, and higher education pushing certain ideologies here some STILL remain super contentious and polarized. But a few cartoons and operas are going to shift them in an already less accepting country abroad? Come on, use that to smuggle LGBT people at least out of the remote shithole towns that will for sure kill them, if it’s too dangerous to try to get them out of the country

At least then you know your money is doing some tangible good for the population you are concerned about

Ya I agree that food and medicine stuff probably checks out. The hard part is USAID isn’t responsible for what the corrupt gov’t of [x] shithole country does with their aid. I mean to some extent they SHOULD cut it off if it is being completely stolen or mismanaged though, you would think. If they didn’t cut it off, I’m assuming the reason is either too incompetent to notice it’s being wasted, or too scared of the retaliatory repercussions from either [x] shithole country or from within current US admin. To me those scenarios are more likely than some secret international racketeering

This is in regards to food and medicine and stuff though. Yea something like some Iraq tv show costing almost as much as Game of Thrones or whatever, that discrepancy in amount could be going anywhere yea

Oh it would definitely be cheaper, if it were possible

But like I mentioned, when the entire apparatus couldn’t even pull it off here (on some attitudes), it’s simply not going to happen in an already less accepting place with authority figures actively conditioning their citizens against it

A few cartoons, comic books or operas is just pissing into the wind, or pissing away that money. Any other investment would want some sort of confident evidence of just how it creates the long term gain. USAID’s flow chart be like:
