Jesus became plenty popular before this, because the whole idea of his teaching was that you were essentially on equal footing with every other class of humanity.

The church then showed up and institutionalized this and kept a class system in place through things like divine right justification for monarchs etc.

Telling a conceited self righteous monarch he can be above the laws of mere men would place the priest in good stead with that power. Then, the religeous fed the monarchy and the Kings reciprocated.
