I take excellent care of my skin and look at least 10-15 years younger than I am. Getting some sun is good but baking yourself in it is bad. If the result is that I look pretty pale, so be it. I don't purposely try to get tan, but going outside for any length of time and it will just naturally happen. I've seen others who are pale and they can not naturally tan, they either get sun burnt or have to do the whole tanning bed thing (which really looks unnatural to me).

Nearly everyone on my dad's side is like me, there are a few exceptions obviously.

If you can't tan there's something wrong with you, your diet, or you really need to carefully work at it over 5-15 minute periods...

I know people that burn, but its because they go outside 5 minutes a day.

Trust me stick with that. The girls in my high school class that used to lay out in the sun all summer and go tanning in the off season look worn out now. Skin got leathery. Not severe like that old lady but noticeable. Doesn't help that many of them started drinking and smoking in their early teens. You don't think any of that matters when you're a teen but then bam it's 20 years later and you look like shit.
