Freedom of speech is important but moreso is freedom from harassment and violence. Without order you won't have that freedom of speech in the long run.

It's a tough line to draw. With Alex Jones v Sandy Hook, I see parallels with the debate on whether Holocaust denial should be a crime. Or Nazi idolatry. Depictions of Mohammed would be another.

I tend to favor free speech no matter how vile. There's the argument that censorship just makes the fringes more alienated and extreme. But one can't deny that the modern criminal justice system hasn't kept up with laws & enforcement for online stalking and harassment. We as a society seem to take things less serious online than in person which might have to change.

The technology will be used at more than just airports. Ultimately, it'll be a part of domestic surveillance. Think P99 Fraps 24/7 but in real life.

I think you didn't understand what I was getting at Pat. I said I was pro free speech. I don't agree with such restrictions. However a lot of people misunderstand the concept. Whether because 'freedom of speech' is an inaccurate phrase to describe the concept, or because it's the 1st Amendment and somehow that makes it the paramount principle? I don't know, but there are laws which supercede it. Freedom of speech does not mean it's legal to threaten or harass others under that guise. And not all speech is 'free'. Try shouting 'fire' in a theatre or 'bomb' in an airplane and see what happens.

Anyways because the concept is commonly misunderstood, a lot of the worst kinds of behavior in others are brought out by people like Alex Jones. And we tolerate those sorts of action far more than we should. But hey we're a society that's just now persecuting real life sex crimes with seriousness. I imagine coming around to crimes like internet death threats, stalking, luring, preying will take some time yet.

No one likes the cops/GMs till they need em. If you got stabbed or punched on the street by some crazy AJ or JP supporter, and no one was around to see it, would you see the technology as necessarily evil? When it could easily find that person and put them away.

And yea I do think it's ironic FB became more of a political platform than what it was originally intended for. I guess once you get advertising money involved it changes everything.

As far as the cameras, they still false positive on like 20% of minorities. This is going to make life worse for everyone.

The cops will still throw out and not prosecute the person who kills a minority they don't like. They'll still do a sloppy job and file an incorrect report, and mis-identify-mis-represent it to the public. As a case of "a prostitute got what she deserved".

This is a mans world, faulty cameras wont help.
