hbb: also, when you read foucault's the order of things, you might lose your notions on specificity.

I dunno man, if there was anything so compelling in that book, I'm sure it would have been pointed out to me when I've had very much this same discussion with people who are very familiar with his work.. I have an open mind, but I doubt I will lose my love of critical analysis.

I used to use specific language and formal definitions, but then I got sick of the fact that no one outside of the university understood a fucking word I was saying or the point I was making due to their lack of understanding of the English language. I understand both of your arguments and all I can say is that word usage is all about your audience in the end. Neither approach is correct in all instances. If you can get your point across isn't that the underlying reason for communicating in the first place?

For the record I hate roast beef, but love many other sandwiches.

Out of curiosity, I checked OED for etymology on the word professional. It entered the English language in rare usage from the Latin profiteor by way of French in the 15th century, at which point it was particular to a religious calling. The current usage of professional as one who makes a profession or business of any occupation appeared in the OED in 1811.

I suppose now we'll have to have an argument about what archaic means.

[QUOTE=Hasbinbad;993942]harrison.

Question to you hasinbad:are you going to say that words like:Gay only mean homosexual?

In the 50s and 40's, the word gay also meant happy.She did x thing gaily.

Not saying that the words be banned outright, but its always good to understand why they use them.The word ****** could also be used to describe yourself in feeling like you feel like a slave and being treated as sub human.Like george carlan said:context.
