Here are some examples of FDA Defect Action Levels:
Ketchup: 30 fruit fly eggs per 100 grams.
Canned corn: 2 insect larvae per 100 grams.
Blueberries: 2 maggots per 100 berries.
Peanut butter: 50 insect fragments per 100 grams.
Spaghetti: Up to 450 insect parts in a 16 oz. box.
Mushroom: 20 or more maggots of any size per 4 oz. can.
Peaches (canned/frozen): One or more larvae and/or larval fragments exceeding 5mm in total length per 12oz can.
Dates (chopped, sliced, macerated): 5 or more dead insects (whole or equivalent) per 100 grams.
Ground marjoram: Up to 1,175 insect fragments per 10 grams.
Coffee beans: 10 milligrams or more animal poop per pound, and up to 6% insect-infested or moldy beans by count.

The FDA acknowledges that it's often "economically impractical" to produce completely insect-free food

i just realized i have a copy of this book that you linked. i think i bought it because of the behind the bastards episode on dulles, they'd cited this book as one of the sources, i think.

the copy i have is in fair condition, it looks like it was a library book.

i often buy books from thriftbooks, but they are definitely used as hell sometimes. there was a flattened bug in the copy of foucault's pendulum that i ordered.

i try not to give amazon money if i can avoid it.
