Looking at enrolling in IT education soon myself and learning a programming language unless I want to transition into sales. I think there is a reason a lot of people avoid working in sales. Just seems very stressful if you aren't a pathological machine about it. Seems you are either a good salesperson or you are really bad. Risky allocation of time and who aspires to get a career in sales anyway?

Worst case I guess there is always the tar sands. I haven't looked into the safety risks yet and what a new guy arriving at the Sands can expect...I am guessing there is a reason the pay starts at six figures, and probably not entirely due to having to relocate to a shithole and ditch your family and friends.

I think I'm getting too old for the Sands though.

I could go back to school, but IDK how that works with my employment. First world problems of making your own way in the world I guess. Would have been nice to grow up in the 16th Century in a family of master blacksmiths and have it automatically decided for you.

Several years to go before I'm caught up to you though Daywolf as far as # of career changes go. You are a fair bit older than me.
Most of that I did between 17 and 35yo. College I did part time while working full time. I haven't done much in the past 10 years officially, apart from some self education stuff (e.g techy manuals mostly, such as CEH hehe). I had a back injury holding me down for a while, but healed up. I'm going to work on something pretty soon but not sure what yet, either, but not a CEH cert [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

IT is cool, that was my minor in college, why I studied CEH, since I do server stuff still, for better security skill. I've met a lot of guys in IT jobs that didn't do college, just went for piles of certs and started doing it.

Seems to be how its done these days. Combined with a willingness to relocate where the money is being offered. Out towards Michigan they have a lot of under qualified guys coming in making 61-71k just because its some kind of State subsidy.

I grew up with a real powerhouse high school class. It was a private school with good standing, and it seemed like everybody was going to a big entitlement school where just earning the BA opens doors (like it used to, like its supposed to...) Me and a few of my crew ended up at normal state schools, which was good I guess to get some REAL life experience I can offer my son someday. Been an interesting time.

Having acquaintances and peers going to big colleges definitely fucks with you. It probably took me longer to get the focus needed to graduate from my state school because I'd always held it in low regard because I didn't have the grades to compete.

I think being exposed to people who were having big opportunities handed to them took some of the wind out of my sails. It took me a long time to start to form my own sense of self, and my own identity. Still working on it. My perception is definitely vandalized. I'm not jealous of anyone, and I have met people jealous of me (misinformed people or really struggling).

Elite private schools can be really toxic if you can't compete. I met a friend in state college who came from the same background I did. I thought he was bullshitting when he told me his entire class went Ivy league. I looked it up, and he wasn't kidding. I try to remind myself if this guy can mentally get over that, I can suck it up myself and stop looking down on everything.
