I think it's disingenuous to call Trump supporters 'mental gymnasts.' Beliefs within the alt-right aren't intractable things like we are used to calling "beliefs." They adapt to context and targets as needs arise and change. Their only intractable goal is the defense of white authoritarianism. Any beliefs that may support or defend that goal [non-explicitly] may be adopted and discarded at any time to defend any point or attack any particular target.

Mental shapeshifters or cylons may be more apt.

Except that's not what was actually said. Sondland clearly stated there was instruction from Trump through Ghouliani to force Ukraine to announce an investigation or they would not receive aid.
