I think highly technically advanced and/or realistic graphics don't necessarily equal good graphics.

It's like comparing a photograph and a painting and asking which is better. The overall aesthetic is more important... lots of people bitch about WoW having shitty cartoonish graphics, but I think they accomplish damned good aesthetics with relatively simple and efficient graphics.

Plus, the god-awful amount of work that went into making Skyrim look so pretty could have gone toward gameplay [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

The thing is, realistic graphics outdate extremely fast.

You can see it even now, compare CoD MW1 with Black Ops 2. You can see how bad MW1 is by today's standards.
