Human need food and soldiers need food just as much as they need ammo and a gun.
Take any of these out, the soldiers cannot perform.

P.S: it was commissioned members back when I served. We learned in Afghanistan that you can privatize the army and Harper tried but the people wanted none of it, especially the soldiers after tasting Haiburton's food so here we are now, not quite privatized but not a soldier's job anymore.

I think the surprise stems more from national difference: Some folks might be surprised you had the opportunity to join at all. Depending on the era the U.S. military would disqualify people from serving for a lot less reason than your partial deafness. I knew guys who were DQ'd because of trivial non-issues like minor sleep apnea or fully-healed highschool sports injuries. Granted due to my age I'm decades out of date and maybe it has changed.
