America is the land of opportunity, not of handouts.

The problem is that we see increasing barriers to that opportunity because politicians (and right wing media) choose to portray those opportunities as handouts.

Not raising the $7.25 federal minimum wage is one of them (not raised since 2009).

Opposing lower tuition prices or free 2 year education for all is one of them.

Opposing universal pre-K education is one of them.

Opposing Medicare negotiating drug prices is one of them.

The list goes on and on....

Raising people out of poverty and giving them opportunity comes in many different forms and if people can just step away from their self-centric perspective, turn off the opinion shows, they would see the many indirect benefits to everyone: lower crime, higher GDP, higher consumer spending, etc etc
If you think about it, this is the first goverment on earth managed by the people.

And yet for some reason the people are getting fucked.

Are people fucking horrible or what.

This is just a thought experiment.

Maybe, maybe things are actually at the best they can be, based on our time on earth.

Think about it, when was it was "better" for the workers..?

Like, after posted that I thought, well in the 1800s they would just wall the people up into the building behind the bricks if they had a problem with working conditions.

If I didnt like the competition, Id just hire a pinkerton to kill them.

Now, it's not nearly as cut throat, but it's still not easy for sure...

Maybe we're just on the long, long, road to tranquility...

Can you think of a time it was better to be a working class citizen of any territory on earth in any time?

I mean, do you think we should be going back to those times? There are some in this country that do... Just because things are better than they were doesnt mean we should stop the quest to continually improve.. Thats how we got to where we are and we need to keep that momentum.

I would totally pay $0.50 more on a Big Mac if it means I get $1 in indirect returns...
I have the impression the health/medical industry is heavily subsidized by the State. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

We are never going to be able to stop people from acting on the impulses of selfishness and greed, we need guiderails (laws, regulations, etc) to mitigate those human imperfections.

On the same token you will also always have people who are lazy, dont want to contribute and suck off the teat of the system. The fact is, those types of behaviors people learn from their environment.

Being poor has a whole host of other socio-economic problems that come with it: substance abuse, domestic violence, mental and physical health issues, irresponsible decision making. Giving people opportunities is the only way to break that cycle. The majority of people in that situation would gladly take any opportunity to get out of it (the military for instance). Some of the issues people face, such as those listed, are barriers to them actually getting their lives together, as much as they would want to.

I will always be a believer that people by and large are willing to work hard and improve their life situation

No im just sayin that "things are not getting worse" but instead they are continuing to slowly get better.

What I am saying is that if you think life sucks now, and that it can be better, you're asking for something that society has never been able to provide in any manor whatsoever.

So instead of feeling like you're getting ripped off, instead be thankful you live now and not 50 years ago where you would be going to war in a draft.

Notice the progress we're making and instead of thinking its all bad, realize, that it's all good?

Maybe right now its not great, but its the best it can be, and all we can do is continue slowly moving the ball forward, which we've been doing, instead of "rolling it backwards" like everyone thinks.

Basically is the bill of rights.

The problem is even the best people in the world, when cornered, dont give one shit about them.
