I don't know if you heard of power of advertising but its kind of a thing. It makes it hard for old style fast food joints to compete....even if they have better burgers for lower prices (realistically it would probably be 1-2 dollars more).

The only reason we have that stuff around here in Eugene, OR is because the city makes it really hard for them to get in -- especially the nice areas of town. Poor people have other problems, so they don't care whats in their burger and just go to McDonalds because of advertising.

Edit: Sit down restaurants burgers are kind of a different deal. And the fucking tipping requirement here in the USA....I mean that's another thing McDonalds lobbies for I'm sure -- knowing that tips keep people in their fast food joints and not going to sit-down restaurants.

My point is that the founder is not a story of a guy inventing fast food or even McDonalds...the founder story about power, manipulation and conquest.

And that's why I'm not huge on this idea that innovation is rewarded...More like cleverness and intelligence is rewarded. Especially if you value money over personal honor.

Edit: I have to admit that "business innovation" is rewarded (I would say overly so)...but that is the only kind that is rewarded. And according to Mick its the only thing that should be....from what I can tell about his rant on how useless creative ideas are compared to investors and movers/shakers.

Kroc got lucky and did the sleazy move to force the McDonald's brothers out of ownership of the McDonalds restaurant. No, he didn't invent anything, but he did capitalize on the situation, luck favored him. It was all legal too, so it's a question of ethics. That movie was pretty damn good, and highlighted a beginning trend in US restaurants to cut quality in order for consumer "convienance" which marketing helped to usher in that notion to the market. McDonalds now is not what Kroc established and the McDonald's brothers would roll over in their graves at the QAQC standards (what hindered the brothers from franchising because they couldn't find employees that cut the mustard, so to speak) that are in place.
