Stop quoting Somnia, guys. It's making my first addition to my ignore list somewhat meaningless [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

no money to be made in philosophy.
If everyone thought like that, we'd have a world full of lawyers, surgeons and businessmen... Also, there are plenty of college-level professors making decent money, especially when they write their books.

I'm glad you remember your training. I double majored in computer science and psychology and currently in grad school doing experimental work with machine learning and in particular natural language processing. Since MMORPGs model human interacts surprisingly well I actually use log files from these games in some of my research to collect data to analyze.

That aside and on a less computational level, I've always been fascinated with this concept of trolling and how people carry themselves on the internet. It's interesting to see how people interpret hostility or threat to status in a virtual environment where the aggressor stimuli is entirely fictional. As technology plays an increasingly important roles in our social lives, mapping contrived stimuli to appropriate natural stimuli and triggering correct behavioral responses will be important in human-machine-human interactions.
Pretty interesting read, actually. I have noticed certain elements of TMO react in different ways to different stimuli, usually in a very specific way. Usual trolling is met with even greater counter-trolling by Autotune, Tiggles, quido... when they can't keep up with the intellectual level of the debate, or can't be bothered to, Alarti and Frieza_Prexus pull themselves into the argument with heftier, well-written, logical, intelligent retorts.

Alarti hovers dangerously in between troll and witty (which I love), whereas Frieza has very detailed, very reasoned and enlightening posts filled with an aura of gravitas - I enjoy his posts the most, and would love to be against him in a debate some day; however, I must say - his avatar is very disconcerting. Whenever I'm reading his posts, I can't help but gravitate toward it... I mean, it looks like Val Kilmer about to have quintuplets. *shudder*

Keep on livin' the dream!

Haha, it's true, but my vision is a bit rose-colored right now... going to a tech school, constantly surrounded by nerds has my senses a bit off.

its usually RnF so i try to keep the spirit of trolling since no one wants to debate logically..... however the few times that someone wants to come to a real understanding i have refrained from trolling.
So i debate specific to my opposition really.

also i rarely have time to for long engagements since I am usually posting from work from my phone

1st rule of RnF: Don't read any post over 3 sentences. Saves a lot of heartache.
