I like this point by point refutation of my stance that this is the sort of thing where the punishment should be dealt with, sandbox-style, by the players.

Basically this. I mean this is the sort of thing you read about from eve online that even though you may find the game boring, you can sort of marvel at that kind of epic backstabbing that goes on in that game. Cept you dont get banned from it, its celebrated.
