Since I see my character's name on the list.. "Fearstalker", I wanted to point out something. I have a character named "Fearstalker" on two live servers (one enchanter and one monk). It passed the name checks and I have interacted directly with GM's and Guides on the live servers with these characters without issue. I also have a character "Deathstalker" (here as my Shadow Knight) and other variants of the two names on Live.
The main thing about the name filter / corrective action from GM's, is to address stuff like non-fantasy phrases, offensive names, titles, product names, etc. I was a guide for a couple of years on live and I know what name types were considered unacceptable. We tried to be fair and flexible but some names were clearly unacceptable. I was surprised at the names which I saw here and assumed that there wasn't a name policy. It was not until about a week ago that I learned that there is a name policy which is in effect and enforced. Remember also that a name change hurts the person playing the game too (especially if playing the character for a long time and has built a reputation and list of friends) so I think that in such cases, unless the name is in clear need of a change, that it should be left as is. If I recall correctly, if a character was past 20, the name would need to be clearly in need of a change, lower than that and the GM was much more willing to change it. (Guides couldn't change names, just note it and escalate to the server GM / include in our shift notes)

^ I care. Blatantly offensive and/or disgusting names detract from my gaming experience and I will say so. You will not stop me from doing so.

I definitely agree that bad names should be changed or altered to maybe one from some random list of generated fantasy names. I am sad but I fear my name may fall under the bad side of the strict rules of naming ones character.
On live when I started my character was a Dark Elf Shadowknight named Darkvex. Took me about a month or a little more to get to level 20. I was so excited because I became Darkvex Dreadknight the level 20 SK. I love my name and it has served me well in the years of RP and playing games, however, if it does violate and I have to take one for the team to get rid of these terrible... they arent even names really, then I will and I'll be the first to have a new name.

tl;dr The staff hates you more than the people with these names because you're being a whiny little bitch expecting them to act like the carebear GMs on live.

The policy is just there so no one can bitch if their name gets changed. It is far from enforced to a T

^ why would that name violate the rules? Seems fine to me, unless "Darkvex" is a well-known fantasy character that I'm unaware of.
