Yea /raid wasnt actually put in untill then, but raids for sure went over this number in classic, easily.

I can never remember any instance at any time that my guild ever had even close to that in a single raid and we dominated the content for many years. What I do remember is the competing guild would always pop in a few months later with massive numbers and overwhelm the content.

The point of the 72 was an attempt at tuning raid encounters. They actually discouraged zergs.
