I've performed an experiment on my girlfriend that coincides with this a bit.

If i'm really nice to her all the time, give in to whatever she wants, while at first happy with getting what she wants, she eventually starts treating me like shit, trying to walk all over me, run things, etc.

If I'm an asshole, and take none of her shit, she gets super lovey-dovey, makes me breakfast, cleans more, does some of MY chores for me, and actually seems happier.

I don't mean an abusive asshole that calls her names, demeans her, etc. Just assertive, sometimes arrogant, challenging, even abrasive, and all the other things society generally associates with an "asshole".
