As players flock to emulated servers like Project 1999 for a "true" classic experience, are developers neglecting the potential for new gameplay mechanics and storytelling methods? Should the industry focus on evolving the MMO genre instead of catering to nostalgia?

Is it truly ethical to emulate classic games like Everquest, considering the original developers no longer support them? When does nostalgia for a bygone era cross the line into exploitation of intellectual property? How do we reconcile the desire to relive our gaming past with the rights of those who created it?

I say it's always ethical to create fan based projects as a selfless endeavor, creating a business from other peoples property is not. THJ could have used their server to sell ad-revenue or countless other shilling operations to cease being unemployed and probably be fine, although I do believe that a large part of this legal fiasco is DBG management needing a scapegoat to keep their jobs, so maybe not.

I am so excited for THJ downfall, I hope it is epic.
