Yeah, you'd have to renounce your current citizenship since Japan doesn't allow dual-citizenship. Not worth for most people.

Japan is a complex place. On the one hand you're right: they've embraced Western culture (to an almost fetishistic level).

But at the same time, while they see Western stuff as fun, there's a strong undercurrent of "everything not-Japanese is inferior". Remember history: the pro-Western stuff comes from our relations post-WWII ... but Japan was xenophobic for hundreds of years before. Blue Eyed Samurai wasn't (all) fiction: Japan banned all foreigners for hundreds of years (except for one ship a year so they knew what was happening). And don't even get me started on what they've done to other Asian countries (eg. to China in WWII), because some of it makes the Nazis look good.

A country doesn't go from a crazy xenophobic "we're going to conquer all the other inferior races" to Sesame Street overnight, and so their culture today still has some serious xenophobia. It's why their immigration policy is so strict, even though the whole country is aging and they desperately need new blood: they fear the country being "diluted" by foreign blood.

Oh yea I’ve watched a few documentaries. Japan supposedly has stores that will not allow non-Japanese customers. I’ve heard even MOST renters in Japan will outright not rent to non-Japanese or if they do, they are at the back of the list after they’ve addressed every single prospective Japanese renter

And American nuisance streamers like Johnny Somali coming in causing havoc has only made things worse in terms of their impressions of American travelers

And, believe it or not, there’s a shitload, hundreds of thousands, of men and women who have pretty good self-awareness and a good idea of how their looks roughly compare. Sure women might be more picky on dating sites because they can because there’s fewer of them. And everyone becomes more picky the more populated the area they live

But there are tons of people, including my parents and multiple aunts and uncles of mine, who had an understanding of the type of person that would like them back. And they went for that person on a dating site. And they married that person. They didn’t waste years and years trying for 10/10 men or women, or even people significantly out of their league. Why didn’t they? Because they’re not overconfident cocky morons?

My armchair psychological assessment is that the narrator is unsuccessful with women. And the reason is he thinks that he is more attractive than he really is. And then he projects that idea onto the entire USA population and assumes everyone in the country has that problem

I’d love to see this dude interview an insecure, depressed person, male or female. And have him ask them what they rate their own looks as and what they think they could get or deserve in a partner. He’d be astounded when they say “I’m like a 1/10 [when really they are like a 5/10], and I deserve no one”
