I mean think of what goes into making a new genre. You have to invent something extremely novel. It has to be agreeably good to a large audience, ideally with those people creating their own subculture. And you need other people want to produce it, too. That's 3 really hard things to make happen. Kinda amazing that it happens at all.

Yeah sure, but that doesnt change that since 1900 we had:

Ragtime
Blues
Jazz
Rock
Country
Heavy Metal
Electro
Punk
Rap
Reggae

The list goes ON AND ON for entire genera's of music for the last 100 years, but the last 25, literally nothing but adding mumble in front of one of those above words.

Every single sub culture used to have it's own "genera" of music that it invented along with it.

We need Holl Rock.

Decimalized Musical Stave. The decative. Two new notes. Wo and Bo.

Also, like eveyrhing EQ it has all been done. The 12 tones of the chromatic with the varying chords/dischords can only make a certain number of sounds/combos. It took a few years and even a few plagerists tried to use the 3rd oboe part of a Mozart symphony as a hook for a new rock song.

We need Holl Rock. Or the 42 note scale revisited.

What we need more of is new forms of entertainment. We are already drowning in options to distract us from reality. Ever consider what it would like to be an author? Imagine your book versus every other book in the store. Same thing with music. Same thing with video games. Especially once Steam let anyone publish, there's no shortage of video games to play. Or look on itch.io for the library of indie games. Or remember Kongregate with tens of thousands of free flash games? Or every game system ever with stuff you can still play with an emulator.

The soul of everything is already ground down to a flavorless grey paste and it'll get real obvious when AI gets better at whatever art is and instantaneously creates whatever passes for quality entertainment on a whim. Is it still entertaining at that point? I can't decide. One must imagine Homer happy.

I am genuenlly concerned abou tthis.

1. I think that the internet conditioned the last 25 years to see the value, and importance of making something "broadly appealing"

Meaning, if you make something that the zietguist loves, you make billions in merchandising.

If oyu make something that a sub culture loves, you make a decent profit from that "niche" group.

The problem IMO is that niche groups, have been eradicated and replaced with zeitguiests.

Every streamer plays the same games.

Every gamer plays the same games.

Every indi game, is literally the same game....

Like nobody wants to do anything different anymore.

This clip from Wayne's world completely does not apply to modern creativity anymore. Everyone want's their little graphic novel to be optioned as a movie, and a TV series, and 30 video games.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpkecYVRt_E&t=40s (starts at 40- seconds)

"Led Zeplin didn't make music that everybody likes, they left that up to the Beatles"

I appreciate Monsters & Memories for trying to appeal to a very small sect of EQ style gamers. I hope they lean into it and make it repulsive to modern gamers. But I bet it will be some kind of "easy to play, with hard core roots" like every fucking thing else in the god damn world trying to hit a million users day 1.

can't find 5 people to play BECMI Castle Amber module i got off ebay or the retro clones of it like DCC
