So here's the conundrum: She's actually pretty, but insanely fat. Is that better or worse than being fit but really ugly? Not in terms of life expectancy, but in terms of society?

I mean, you know how I feel. I put tons more weight (pun not intended) on the body in terms of respect, and a bit more in terms of attraction. Attraction is in the eye of the beholder, but I would hope any reasonable person in society would at least put more respect and value on a fit body than a face. I don’t know how you couldn’t

Us valuing a symmetrical attractive face so highly is a useless evolutionary hangover. I hate that it holds sway with me

Totally agree, getting\being\staying fit takes real discipline, especially as we age. It's just a shame in that fat chick's case, cause if she were a healthy weight she'd be quite the dish (heh, dish, pun not intended but fuck it I'm leaving it in).

Can't control your facial features but you sure as shit can control your weight.

Fat girls are extremely unattractive. I'll take a fit butterface anyday. At least she'll keep up with you hiking / skiing / etc.

Yeah I tend to fall into that camp too, even ugly chicks can usually look decent with makeup, but there's nothing you can do to hide dem rolls.

An interesting experiment would be to take a picture of a hot, in shape chick, and then use AI or something to keep adding 1 pound to her, and see where the threshold is where she transitions from hot to gross. Cause I will say I don't like overly skinny chicks either, where you can see ribs and stuff. I don't wanna think about your haunted-ass skeleton while we're getting busy.

Abuse happens and is correlated with Obesity. If you didn't know now you know.

Beauty is common. Either you are born with it or you pay for it. What's rare is a great outlook, a great personality and none of us know someone's inner world at a glance. Humans are hardwired for love and connection. If we don't have that we hurt. And I think to cast such a wide net is unfair and in the context of survivors of abuse maybe precisely the point just to be left alone. Can you imagine how this manifests when both desires are of vital importance to someone simultaneously?

Everyone does the best they can. But I'm not Captain save-a-ho™ and I don't advise that in others.

I have no doubt that's true. But way more people get fat from donuts than coping with abuse. Both things can be true.

Abuse is also correlated with anorexia, so it's not exactly a strong indicator. You can file both under "eating disorders", but jimbo and his wife tammy-ray in the trailer park are usually just fat from chugging mountain dew and ring dings.

I think Brené Brown puts it well when she says (and provides the underlying research methodology used to arrive here) that we all struggle with addiction or know someone who does. And it can take many forms like overeating. But ultimately people do what they do and lets face it if you don't learn how or don't recognize the need to eat healthy you won't.

All that’s needed for more confirmation of this is just to watch any episode of my 600lb life. I’ve watched quite a number and almost always the person mentions a history of trauma, sometimes in the form of one or both parents suddenly dying, sexual assault, growing up super poor and not being able to afford food, etc

In those cases the person seems to use food, specifically very unhealthy food, as a form of coping and self-medication the same way others might turn to alcohol or drugs

But in those cases, or any case of morbid obesity, trauma is an explanation but shouldn’t become an excuse. I’ve personally never felt that losing fat in order to be appealing to the opposite sex is ever a good reason. But doing so to improve quality of life def is

I agree if it's in a totally vain narcissistic way cause you just wanna hook up and bang mindlessly, but making yourself more appealing to the opposite sex so you can meet somebody you really connect with and maybe start a family would certainly improve your quality of life, and theirs.
