Few questions:
What do you gain from pvp. Xp? Char advancement of some kind?
What do you lose from pvp. XP? items? corpse runs?
Is there potential for grief?
Can you get into the main lands and gank or is it frontier pvp only?

XP, coin, and realm points (RP). RP can be used to purchase special realm abilities (RAs) which are super powerful and usually centered around PvP.

Nothing other than the time to run back to the fight.

The only thing I can really think of is Darkness Falls. But you can't really "grief" in DAoC considering that it's realm vs. realm warfare. You can be the guy who camps the entrance to DF picking off dudes 40 levels lower than you, but really it's just kind of expected.

Nah, the "mainlands" are safe from PvP. However, the best dungeon in the game (for experience and loot) is open to only one realm at a time (depending on who is doing the best in the frontier). When access switches, pvp occurs (Darkness Falls). There are also battlegrounds you can join until you level up to max for the frontiers.

I always wanted to try DAOC, but the idea that there is no world pvp is a little bit of a turn off. I've played games with specific battlegrounds/areas for pvp and it just isn't the same as being able to be ganked or gank anywhere like EQ.

I can relate to that, for a long time I was a big fan of FFA PVP (not just in EQ) also, still am. Though after a while of trying to find the ideal EQ PVP server, run by the ideal Devs and Admins, it just seems like a never ending cycle of bullshit.

This DAOC experience we got going, is kinda like the middleground between FFA and the completely restricted, instanced PVP (WoW/Warhammer style). Why? Because the best XP and Loot, mostly comes out of zones where PvP is ENABLED, and none of those zones are instanced.

The most dangerous PvP zones in the game, give upwards of 80% XP bonus, it takes balls to go into enemy territory knowing they can wipe you much easier when you're lvl 30 as opposed to lvl 50. Some people like playing safe behind some kind of layer of protection, that's not us (hence why we left that other guild that was mentioned in previous posts).

In fact, the only instanced zones on Uthgard are the ones made specifically for QUESTING, and the people who enjoy doing things like that between times of PvP or just to improve themselves further. After all, if the PVE [environment] is harsh enough, it can challenge even the most hard-core of PvPers, wouldnt you agree?

I'm downloading the game now. I plan on playing a Troll Skald. I played a warrior back in the day and it was such a pain in the ass trying to catch people with no speed/ranged abilities.

Hmm, is there anyway to use the old character models? I liked the way my old troll looked.

Yep, in options under character models. DAOC's interface and perks are very EQ-eraish, it did come out within 2 years of EQ's release after all.

Updated List of Current Players (mostly dwarves, kobolds being the only other exception) in our group:

Skald (hybrid melee/speed/songs) - Varrius (Scrooge), L30 Dwarf Skald;
Healer (aug-buffer/healer) - Vorhal, L22 Dwarf Healer;
Healer (buffer/healer/CC) - Needed
Shaman (buffer/healer/dotter) - Vastik L25 Shaman, OPEN
Berserker (melee dps) - OPEN
Savage (melee dps) - OPEN
Thane (hybrid tank) - Kvasir L32 Thane
Warrior (pure tank) - OPEN
Hunter (Spear DPS) - Furen L23 Hunter

We've started PvP a few days ago and I've got 190 kills by lvl 29 already just to give you guys an example of whats what! I'll try to make some Fraps caps on the next run, I just forget it most of the time in the heat of the moment...

The roster changed a little bit and so we need more melee dps and maybe a second healer or shammy. So if you want to join our crew officially, make sure you're a Dwarf and willing to go all the way whether its convenient or not -- and we'll get you up in no time! We're the meanest Dwarf pvp group in Midgard!

I'll make a Dwarf berserker. What should I put my points in?
