The news is telling me Putins troops are disengaging from many areas in Ukraine.

Could we possibly be seeing a controlled withdrawal?

No, no it wasn't a failed invasion. That part went fine. The military part was great. What failed was the nation-building. The intention was always to leave after turning it over to a functional and effective central government. The military was always like ok let's get out of here and the State Dept. was like no these guys aren't ready yet because we're bumbling fools. And finally everyone was sick and tired of it and the State guys wanted to stop being blamed for everything so they were like oh these guys are good to go now let's pull out. And the military did their own assessment and they found out that State was basically lying, that nothing was organized. So they tried to warn people as late as July 29th but the Taliban took over two weeks later on August 15th.

To recap: Invasion sound, cheers all around! Politicians and bureaucrats lied, many people died.

The foolish part was thinking you can govern goatherds. Afghanistan and Pakistan should given to Iran and India and divided at the Indus

I wonder where that myth started. I would say the Soviets but that would be admitting equipment shortages. Still, the brave and resourceful warrior mythos gain might be worth it.

I mean they showed it in Enemy at the Gates but that movie was crazy unhistorical and came after the game anyway.

here some truth about that.
the myth have 2 origins:

1) during WW1, Russia did had huge shortage of arms and ammunition - not enough to equip mass mobilization, so during 1st year of war, these 1 rifle for 3 man was sort of real, until industry and logistics caught up.

2) now during German invasion of 1941, the regular army was well equipped, but hastily mobilized forces again fallen on logistical issues, and during defense of Moscow, REAL posters were put around city asking young men to sign up to the army, and "obtain rifle in battle". The weapons/ammo were available - they just were not where they were needed. Again logistics did caught up with actual needs in a few weeks.
