You can patch your files to fix the helm transparency glitch on the old world helms. Can't fix it being an ugly bucket though. The custom helm looks nice by EQ's limited standards. I won't buy a Crown of Narandi because I want to keep the visible custom helm look on my Shadow Knight. That's the price of vanity!

If you go max charisma it's not too bad, be extra aware to keep your charisma buff on - with the right gear its not hard to get 200+ on any race. I like the hide feature for afks and 1st line attempt at a charm break.
