What's so bad about buying coin for rl cash if they allow people to purchase characters?

Legal reasons, mainly. You could also say that it cheapens the integrity of the server as a whole, and while buying characters for plat does so as well, it isn't nearly the same. You still have to acquire a substantial amount of in-game cash, so you won't get someone who has never played before in your Sebilis group. Everquest is easy enough that someone who has played one class to a high level can probably play any class adequately, but not someone who hasn't even played one character to 50+. If someone buys a level 50 rogue, they might not have experience playing that class, but you know they've achieved something - 50k plat takes some time and effort to farm, and you can't do it in any kind of timely manner until you've already leveled one char to or near 50. Any EQ veteran can pick up any class and learn it well enough to solo and group in a day.

Someone showed me a website that sold items/money/accounts for only p99. These things costed hundreds of dollars. Gave me a really good laugh that people would spend 400 dollars on platinum here on a private server.

Sadly I forgot the website. I wouldn't link it here even if I could remember it but the person who linked it to me said they already put it in the petition/exploit forums before.

As for the ammunition...well, everyone here acts like RMT leads to emulators being shut down. It's the donations that get them shut down. It's the copyright violations often found on the websites. It's not letting players have freedom to do as they wish, it's all about the bens the operator is getting.
