Because we have loved and we know what a huge part of life it is. How good it can be even with the bad parts of it.

They love you and want to you have that in your limited existence. Oh yeah, older people are acutely more aware of how short life is for reasons. Also how its much more rare to find love the older you get for reasons.

Also, being alone is abnormal for humans. It’s why, in this time of relative affluence and convenience, suicide rates are skyrocketing and Zoloft is more popular than skittles. I think they are probably genuinely interested in your well being, while at the same time trying to relive the best parts of their own lives.

My best buddy just hit 35, still single from birth, with interest in girls but an inability to get any of them. Throughout college it didnt seem like all that big of a deal because we were still young, but now hes old enough that his awkwardness isn't "cute/funny" anymore. He is he is the textbook definition of an incel. He is just plain awkward around people and around women he is even worse. Living a sexless, loveless life has to be one of the most difficult challenges anyone can go through.

So to reiterate, they probably want to ask because they know that of all the things that have brought them joy in this life, loving relationships, romance and sex top the charts.
