The classic UI had a viewport by default. Controls were laid out around it.

I suppose you could argue that being able to customize viewport isn't classic, but the classic game definitely used a viewport smaller than the UI and had controls laid out around that viewport.

In short, you need viewport to attempt to replicate the classic UI.

Yes I really like having unobstructed viewport.

If there was an overlay that would dock all of the UI elements. Perhaps with some quality artwork. Marble, granite and bricks. Its what the original UI had.
