Exactly. My wife plays a female halfling here (sometimes). She doesn't even call me "hun". Probably because she doesn't want me to vomit on her feet, but hey...

I wouldn't ever play a halfling, male or female, so I can't tell you. :P

IRL, pet names tend to be a regional thing in the US and I've gotten them a lot from female waitstaff at restaurants where I've lived, which I don't appreciate if the server happens to be younger than me. I don't care if they think I'm cute as the dickens, I don't need a 19-year-old calling me 'sweetie' while taking my order.

What I wanna know is why I get called bro, man, sir, or dude, regardless of the gender of my toon. If I'm on my female cleric or monk, you can call me 'miss', thank you very much. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

It's their way of discretely declaring their heterosexual orientation while simultaneously boasting of the supreme intellect immune to the deception of pretty pixels that has alerted them to your nefarious intent ^^

In short they are worried they might be gay if they mistake another man for a woman ^^

Women aren't concerned with this sort of thing, because unlike men, women do not look at every member of the opposite sex as a likely mate.

lol this is right also. On other games, while playing female chars I got called "bro", and I instantly recognized this as the guy either letting me know he knew I was a guy playing a female toon, OR he was fishing to see if I would correct him to let him know I was really a female playing a female toon!

I had a buddy on live years ago who only played female toons, and he kept it secret from 99% of the people in the game. he said he got all kinds of free stuff from dudes, and that it was funny how desperate some of them were. I found this a bit disturbing, personally I could never deceive lonely men with a female avatar for gifts.

Obviously "catfishing" was being done way before the movie came out.

For sure! Actually, there have been a few informal(?) surveys on gender, gender representation, and genderbending within the EverQuest gaming community. The stereotype is what you describe (men playing women to get free stuff from other men, or men who want to look at something 'nice'), but people did it for a lot of different reasons and it's not just men.

It's an interesting topic.
