They were both 16-bit. Just snes had double the memory while sgen had double to triple the CPU speed. The sega was more balanced, if sound/music matters to you. Less graphically (mostly in colors) but it had a synth, hence the need for the better cpu, as well as good for graphics effects. That was one of the big selling points of the C64 years earlier, it too had a synth, and was phenomenal for it's day.

Most of the difference was more about the game selection. Sort of east vs west. I've never really been big into eastern style games, apart from like early zelda which was part of the reason I bought both.

I had both but SNES, Chrono Trigger, Zelda, ff3,streetfighter alpha 2, megemanx,metroid3 best pound for pound gaming system ever

i pity anyone who didn't own a sega genesis. Its almost as bad as a n64 purist that didn't own a playstation

True today perhaps, but sega was still worth having back at the time. I had both and I probably played my sega more.

Largely the case because of RPGs and few simple games like mario that are timeless.

I remember seeing a Dreamcast on display, but it didn't seem to have the game line up to get me to commit.

What? No way. Genesis had the 32x...

There was nothing white trash about putting a graphical upgrade onto your system and playing those star wars fighter pilot games.
