Does it matter what weapons you have when French people are using them? When was the last time France won a military encounter with . . . anyone?

Nonsense. Summing up Napoleonic France's legacy like this is like saying Nazi Germany had no military success because in the end it was eventually defeated and conquered.

Every country has a litany of embarrassing military incompetence, including the United States. Germany, in spite of probably being the greatest military culture of modern times (laid the foundational doctrine for the modern US military), ended up on the losing side of two world wars and lost half its territory. At least the French were smart enough diplomatically to end up on the winning side each time.

i understand you guys are fed since your younger age by hollywood that USA is the greatest and mightiest and saves the world every day, but real world is not that simple.. damn i even remember that movie where USA decipher enigma during WWII and saves the world.. when it's actually the brits that deciphered enigma. Sure, but we at least win SOME of the time. In fact, the US has won (French and Indian War (again, everyone beats the French), War of Independence, War of 1812, Mexican War, Spanish-American War, WW 1, WW 2, Korea, Iraq 1) a lot more than we have lost (Vietnam, Iraq 2 (nominally a win, but c'mon)).
