Dexterity. Coordination; affects how much damage you deliver with a bow/thrown weapon, time between attacks, how fast you learn certain skills, and how often certain spells and weapons hit their mark. Also affects some skills and Bard songs.

Not uncommon for some info from manuals to be divorced from actual gameplay.

That line also implies higher hit rate and IIRC, currectly, that's basically a function of skill and level difference, dex does nothing.

That could explain why there is so much dex on caster gear though.

I think DEX was originally intended to play some part in spellcasting.

I found this interesting post about ranged melee damage, with a bunch of player reports from October 2002. It doesn't settle things either way, but the final post does say:

I get the same max hit regardless of dex, but at the higher dex I get it significantly more often.

That at least implies that strength impacted bow damage (in 2002).

There's also a bunch of damage reports from various (almost) classic players, including their DEX/STR; if someone wants to crunch the numbers on them they might reveal something.
