Best group for what?
Until you define what you want to do this question is impossible. If you want to kill big trophy stuff, any 2 classes with a level 60 torpor/epic shaman. For raw leveling speed that's a toss up, but enchanters for charm dps are a prime choice as are necros as are shamans as are well geared monks. Cleric and ench with charmed pet are insanely powerful. For speed of leveling, I would vote a caster group that has a necro in it. (could be sham/ench or cleric/ench). For raw speed of leveling, bard + 2 others (preferably with aoe). For doing trio in tricky places like kael arena? Make sure you have a monk to split stuff. Monk ench cleric works. But yeah, until define what you want to do the question is impossible. No "best" trio will include rangers, paladins, sks, bards, druids ... etc, but each of these classes can fit very nicely into a good functional trio. The undeniable "power" classes: shaman enchanter necromancer cleric monk Pick 3 and roll.

If you all want to be able to solo and you want to be good enough to dungeon crawl also, and you don't want to be dependent on gear, and you want to die as little as possible my suggestion would be shaman, necro, mage.
They are all great soloers, and they all have pets (shaman at 34.) Indoors you can have the shaman slow and root. Outdoors you can snare and fear. The necro can keep the shaman healthy for cannibalize. The mage can summon gear for pets. The shaman has regen to counter lich. The necro can charm/mez undead. The mage could swap pets based on mobs (for stuns, ds, root/tank...) You could also add just about anything and make a bigger group without much adjusting. You would have plenty of cc, plenty of dps, plenty of utility, plenty of options. I believe this group would perfectly fit with what you're looking to do. | ||

Content and target goals will obviously have to be taken into consideration, but here is a simple list:
Cleric+Chanter+Shaman Cleric+Chanter+Necro Cleric+Chanter+Mage Cleric+Shaman+Monk

Cleric/chanter/chanter is the best trio for leveling. Probably not the funnest though.
shaman/chanter/monk seems like a waste of a third spot imo. You got to heal monk and it cant gate out of places. You should pick either a melee dps trio or a pet based trio. A great melee trio is shaman/monk/rogue. Another good one is shaman/chanter + monk/rogue + hybrid. If you go pet based, pick chanter plus any two of: mage, necro, shaman/druid. Druids cant summon pets (nwb is garbage) but they can charm animals and mix well with any magic class that is not a shaman. Plus they get transportation spells. I dont know why anyone would consider a wiz for a trio. Porting opens a lot of content up to you but the druid can port plus sow, harmony, tracking, and other support skills. If your friend is going to get his son playing and they live in the same house make sure to go ahead and request an IP exemption because it takes a while to get.

Related question about Sham/Dru/XXX Melee
I already have a RL friend 14 Sham/Druid duo- we're animal charming in the Karanas. Another RL friend is interested in rolling a character, and I want to push her towards a tank class, or a Rogue to DPS while druid charm tanks. If she goes for a tank class, what would work the best for the least PP spent on gear? Also, would an undergeared tank be strictly better than a Rog + charm animal tank?
