Really not a whole lot in most states since assault rifles are really meant to have semi-auto / burst / full-auto settings by design, but are neutered to comply with state and/or federal laws. But, they also have a complement of attachments and stuff designed to fit the weapons (e.g bayonets, grenade launchers [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] , folding or telescopic stock etc etc etc). But imo much of the difference is just cosmetic when you get down to it.

The technical definition is anything thats mag fed and has a pistol grip. As far as the media and politicians are concerned, it's any scary black gun with rails on it.

FYI an assault rifle is meant for closer quarters rather than 300 yrd sniping. A good assault rifle will put a lot of rounds down range 100yrds centermass without overheating or jamming. And be able to be used effectively to clear a room from an entry point with a rapid rate of fire.
