I have to hop back and forth a bit. I always looked at it like a circle:

At the top of the circle you have moderates, the majority. They bounce either way based on current issues or lean slightly one way or the other. They can be mixed on different issues.

The right end of the circle is for Republican extremists, the left is Democratic extremists.

The bottom of the circle is where people who lean way too far left or right eventually end up meeting up in bat shit crazy coo-coo land. You can go right so far you end up left and vice versa.

If you are not on the top 25% of the circle somewhere, you are probably either crazy or way out of tune with society in general.
