in L.A. area you can go to Disneyland (halloween time, great for kiddies), Medieval Times is great, Universal Studios is there but I didn't care for it (half the rides were down is most likely why), and if you wanna drive to San Diego the zoo is super nice. Took my 2 yrs old son and wife to San Diego and had a great time. Weather is perfect and good scenery.

Also went to "In n Out Burger" since some of my friends recommended, OMG! Best fast food burger ever!

I did San Diego for a few years right after college - amazing place, but slowly I began to dislike the constant nice weather. I wanted thunderstorms, real rain, even snow - I even wanted a few days of hazy, hot and humid.

Eventually I broke and went back East - but I will always lust for In-N-Out...
