Common core is a way of formalizing the way most people do math problems in their head. It's mostly opposed by people who were taught a different way and are resistant to change.

"I didn't need that shit when I was a kid, and the shit I needed when I was a kid is the penultimate of human enlightenment. I DON'T LIKE CHANGE!"

Standardized testing guts the educational system. Common core, though, makes fucking sense.

Lol they stopped teaching kids how to sound words out and instead taught them whole word reading for a few years. Whole word reading is something every advanced reader does, but when they tried to circumvent the basics and teach that to kids.. Well I'm sure you've heard the story. Didn't work out so well. Common Core will lead to the exact same thing. Advanced users of arithmetic use that trick to come to easy solutions (though honestly in this case it's less efficient and taxing than if you actually had memorized a table). But that's the thing, ADVANCED users do it. You can't circumvent foundational knowledge and trach advanced problem solving tactics and expect it to work out well. In this case, we have hard evidence that it in fact does not work out and is actually detrimental.

Common Core is the dumbest thing that has ever been implemented in schools. Math worksheets with word problems that have no attainable answers. Even 4 year math majors can't solve this crap and the scariest part is 1st graders are being assigned this stuff. Kids are not even being taught cursive anymore. If you agree with common cunt, enjoy raising a stupid kid

you follow louis ck on twitter?

all standardized testing depletes any teaching of critical thinking because the results are all that matters in terms of them being a number that can be pointed to to say that the test works or not. it's an attempt to quantify how schools are working that got twisted into a billion dollar industry thanks, mainly, to the great state of TX leading the way.

what happened to finding out SATs are next week once a year? lol

My opinion is that common core is trying to increase the number of successful applicants that graduate from universities. People often leave high school without the ability to support a claim with hard evidence. that's an important life skill most on this forum wouldn't know anything about. they end up taking (and failing) remedial classes because their parents didn't give a big enough fuck about their educational progress to keep track. Now they are making the teachers and schools responsible.. not really fair to teachers imo.. they do enough for little pay as it is.

after reading the expectations of students under common core.. it just looks like college preparatory curriculum to me..

So you are in support of college prep saying at the age of 6... and you are trying to imply that you don't lack knowledge of necessary life skills like "most on this forum".
