At the time I didn't have comparable offers, but my daughter was about a year old and my wife basically said I'd be going alone if I did. I'm glad I didn't though, I had just started a network engineering gig about a year before that and it lead into some pretty nice opportunities and experience which I cashed in on a couple years ago. I'm in Minnesota so the cold doesn't really bother me, and I know the isolation wouldn't have either. I think I'd actually enjoy living up there, fishing is my favorite thing to do outside of work and it doesn't get better than Alaska. Wife and kid have different plans though I'm sure I'll end up living some place warm soon!
