prolly cuz they have awful play time, no patience for pve, and log on around 2am because most of them are tweakers

vztz had plenty of competition, there were definitely eras of elite guilds raping because they were that god damn good, plenty of instances of small groups of players stomping the zergs. and also instances of zergs being coordinated by a master of pvp and slaying the elite guilds. Majority of the time though, there were some lifers that could run shit in pvp, and there was little to no drama WITHIN the winning small guild.

Anyone trying to attribute an inability to combat an opposing guild doesn't realize that most VZTZers have evolved their life to the point where they cant grind 8 hours a day whereas most of the blue99ers have dedicated body and soul to 12 hour game sessions and win by attrition.
