Brightness Contrast problem

When I click play everquest from the server selection menu my entire PC's brightness is immediately and significantly raised. (I also get this when loading other EQEmu's)

I get migraines and if I have one, the bright screen really hurts my head. If anyone knows a way to correct this, please let me know!
