Question Question about necro pet damage and fd

I realize that I have to out damage my pet in order to get full xp from a kill while soloing. My question is, if I cast a few dots and then feign death to remove my aggro, and then immediately stand up, do I still get "credit" for the damage I did before the feign? If not, do I get credit for the dot ticks that happen after I stand back up but were cast before the feign?

I do not know for sure (as in, I have not tested this specifically), but I am going to make an educated guess based on some other factors:

When you feign death, you wipe your aggro, and the damage you have done toward the taking of experience. This is how many necromancers powerlevel. Successive ticks of a DoT does not count toward taking of experience. So, once you place a dot, if you feign death, and stand up, all successive ticks will not put you toward experience. Note: This does not apply to certain dots. The lifetap DoT for example will put you back for stealing XP the second you get a tick of healing from it, whether at full HP or not. I believe Darkness works the same way.

Because of this, I would suspect that feign deathing would remove the damage you have done from the calculation. So lets say you place a DoT that will deal 30% of a mob's' HP. It is at 100%. It ticks to 85% (half way through the DoT), and you FD. When you stand up from FDing, the other 15% will not count to your experience, meaning the new 100% mark is 70%, as that 30% is now voided experience. This means to beat your pet, you now need 51% of the remaining 70%, or 35.1% of the overall damage. Note that at this point, your pet has probably been doing damage, so he or she will be well ahead of you in damage after the flop.

Again, I have not tested this specifically, but this is what I would guess based on how necro PL works.

P99's resident necro expert... and I totally agree, FD'ing probably does wipe your damage totals.

If your intention is to wipe aggro then that's fine. If not and you're unsure about having done 50% damage, pull your pet off at roughly 20% and secure the last damage through dots yourself <3

once you stand back up from FD do the ticks start counting as your damage again? never seen a necro PL wasn't sure if they stay FD'd until mob dies or they can get back up immediately.

Should be able to get back up immediately as long as it's a successful FD. I think.

Blabbermouth more likely. :P

Can definitely agree with pulling the pet off at 20%. As soon as the mob starts death walking, let your DoTs do the work, since you wont have to keep Fear going.

On a successful FD, you should be safe to stand back up and your DoT will not take XP. However, I found inconsistent results. Most of the times, my DoTs would not take XP. But if I stood up instantly after the FD, it would sometimes do so. So, I FD, wait 3-4 seconds, and then stand up, sit down and med.

So no, normally successive ticks after standing up from the FD do not count toward your XP. You FDing off the initial cast of the DoT forbids all the DoTs damage, making it void.
