While I dont disagree in the least that Sabbath is metal, I wonder what we're all defining as metal in our own minds. Metal styles were around before Sabbath, go back to early Floyd for example in '67. While they're harmonizing lyrics etc there is definitely some metal "style" guitar etc going on in the background (listen to The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" album).
So do their harmonies of voice make them not metal? I would say no, that isn't the case... Was all their music metal, of course not, and I would he hard pressed to say that every Sabbath song was as well... but that doesn't mean they didn't have metal songs. So what is truly defined as "Metal". I saw one person mention guitar distortion, but that was around before Sabbath... lyrics about the devil, hell, etc... people might refer to that as "death metal" (by today's standards it may just be emo)... but isn't that just a FORM of metal since not all Metal has lyrics about the devil and hell. So if we're all using different terms as to what is metal, maybe we need to start with defining a common agreement before we go saying that someone is or is not metal, since what I say is metal may not be the same as what you claim is metal [You must be logged in to view images. If you have to ask, I'm inclined to think you'll never know.
Typed that with my balls--for extra metal.

Who gives a fuck what you label it? I have never once gotten into an argument about what is "metal" with any of my musician friends. People who understand music have no desire to play in the sandbox of definition with you music newbies.
Music is either good, or bad. Stop trying to force every fucking thing into a box. When i see guys who think they are totally "metal" and argue about what is and what isnt metal...i just start laughing because they are doing exactly what american idol and all the pop music they claim to "hate" does. At the same time, i dont care what you call sabbath. Call it metal, call it rock, call it doomacolypitcalgenocidalmegalomaniacal steelmetal. It doesn't matter, it fucking rocks, thats what matters. Class dismissed.
