I say that MMOs should institute a (“select the genre”) name generator that generates a list of three names you can select from. No outside names will be accepted. That way their world consists of players named according to their conventions.

Think about it. We all get stuck with a name given to us by our parents…unless you change it later in life. Does this make you less likely to play the game of life? No, you continue on playing because, in the end, it is the game that matters. (As a side note, I am glad that RL society punishes people for ridiculous names. Could you imagine sitting next to a co-worker named “CreamInMyAss2766” or "Pedi-file"? Ha-ha.)

EQ does have a name generator in character creation (we're just not required to use it). Though I did just roll the name 'Gogagog' for an ogre warrior, which is pretty amazing.

You stopped short of where you were suppose to then say "this breaks my immersion! Why doesn't everyone play the game how I expect them to!?"

Even on live there were characters with questionable, or at worse, offensive, names. Some got changed, some didn't. Some might even say that "dancing on the edge" is "classic."

Finally, Sony, by your own admission, is stricter on the naming policy, so instead of suggesting others go play there, how about you go play there. Then you can report names all day.
I so want to put my penis in your butt.

Still have a screenshot somewhere, of a female ogre named "Vagisil."

That's an interesting offer, but I will have to decline.

I've seen the naming policy enforced, but I think the GMs are only aware of it if someone complains via petition - I doubt Sirken is hovering over a list of character names every night looking for violations, he's got better shit to do. Examples I've seen include Hugecock being renamed to Huock and Penish Head being renamed to Pinesh.

While it's obvious that the GMs have better stuff to do than play name police it does feel like the sheer amount of illegal names is a bit out of hand. You can do a /who at any time of the day and get at least one reportable result without even seeing a last name. It's not like they have to go out of their way scouring the lands of Norrath and tracking down the evil naming policy breakers.

I would love to see a GM make an official post stating a time frame on a select day where they will be going on a name-changing rampage. Not for the sake of changing names, just to see the cockroaches scatter. I guarantee you the population would drop immensely during the scheduled inspection. At the very least, the population would shift from mains with illegal names to lvl 1s with illegal names.

Either way it's kinda 'Meh' for me. I don't get into RP'ing but I still facepalm when I see some tard running around named "Tittyboi". Eventually my face does get sore, so I guess I'm on the enforcement side. Though I see no need to rename non-offensive mule names. (Looking at you, Bob. (Apparently your name is offensive))

I can tell you right now I have pissed off alot of people for renaming them. Especially taking away surnames because they form a phrase.

I enjoy role playing and realistic names of the fantasy world.

I doubt anyone here, if they were writing a fantasy book would name a character Crashin N'Smashin.

I tend to ignore people who request dumb surnames and strip the bad ones all the time.

You can ask Zage Themage, he pretty much went apeshit when i removed "Themage" from him that he kinda became a deputized name Nazi for me.

We try to enforce it. But as someone pointed out earlier we all full time jobs, or like myself juggle being a full time mom with kids. So when I get on to help out people and their petitions im more focused on the 30+ pages of petitions to go through then wondering the world looking for people with non fantasy names.

Don't see why not. Sounds completely appropriate for an Ogre or Troll... maybe even a Dorf.

The great fantasy novels of all time have such characters.
