Stop trying to convince yourself pvp in EQ is good. It has and always will be terrible. There is a reason those servers died off.

Um, Zek is still a server on live and vztz was around only about 2 years longer than p1999 has been.

Every post on EQ live about the last year relating to zek is how the server is a ghost town. It died because the game scaled horribly in PvP as it progressed primarily because it wasn't initially tuned for PvP.

yea pvp was still booming at 80, had like 4 or 5 top guilds competing still. even after the 85 expac my pk guild would just camp the port in to the new xpac. then it really, really went downhill from there after a huge mass ban sting operation that hit half the server for using the 0 delay ghost hax.

Actually Zek started dying during Planes of Power and the following expansions, for two reasons:

1) The gear-gap wasn't impossible to overcome until plane of time gear....even people in VT gear were killable by people of equal level in just bazaar trash. Plane of Time gear had WAY to many SVs and raw health, making it impossible for someone in non-VT gear to even compete.

2) POK books and instancing made pvp easily escapable...you rarely got to actually KILL anyone anymore.

Zek wasn't even combined til like at least Omens of War. Also, I'd argue the gear gap got too wide even earlier, possibly Velious and definitely in Luclin. How else do you explain the massive failure that was the Good Team?

Velious was the START of the gear gap for sure. NTOV and ST loots gave your guild a huge advantage. However I was in the weakest top-tier guild on TZ and we were clearing ST shortly after the top two guilds.

I can only speak about my experiences on TZ.

On Tallon Zek the gear gap didn't become impossible to overcome until Pandemonium poopsocked their way into the elemental planes then shut all other guilds out by permakilling at least one flagging mob.

They continued doing this even after they were killing Quarm, causing a huge gap where the 2nd place guild was JUST breaking into eles while basically all of PDM was in full poTime regalia.

Good team didn't fail because of a gear gap. They failed because their team was completely non-existant except for one guild named <Black Prophecy>. They were able to get decent numbers at times but they never got zone control of Karnors, Sebillis, or really anything except City of Mist since the other teams had two or more viable guilds.

Neutral team was just as bad but not because of population. They had multiple guilds but neutral guilds like <Darkenbane> would train their own team to try and steal xp spots from <Tides of Wrath>. If the people on their team didn't act like idiots, it would have been much closer with evils.

Evil team wasn't nearly as overpowered as people claim. Guilds like <Hate> when lead by Milt were failing chardok king with like 30+ people and really had gear no better than neuts. I was in <Ruin> and by the time we actually started killing ToV mobs, the server was basically already dead anyway. Not to reach a revival until PoP era.

Moral of story is 3 teams failed pretty bad on EQ and same thing happened on most DAoC servers too. Two teams (good vs evil) is much more balanced.
