Everquest is essentially a card collecting game. It's also like golf. At the end of the day you compare scorecards. Yes, this is the entire point. I wish Jeff Butler would have talked about this more during his appearance on A Loving Robot's podcast.

He talked about good and bad decisions that were made during Everquest's development. The massive bottlenecks were an interesting choice but without dividing the players into the haves and have nots you don't have something to perpetually strive for.

I have watched Seal Team grow over the years on green. I have had some run ins with a few members but that has not coloured my opinion of the guild. I see that this posting is a grievance you had with someone from Seal Team but I also see that this is also a gross mischaracterization of an entire guild.
