The civil war was mainly in response to a dispute over whether or not new states would have slavery. The north was absolutely fine with the south having slaves and the south was absolutely fine with the north not having slaves. The southerners wanted the new states to have slavery and the northerners wanted the new states to be slavery free.

Also, Lincoln didn't give a shit about slavery either way.

This is all true. Lincoln would be considered racist today and in no way considered the black man his moral or intellectual equal. It doesn't change the fact that the south tried to secede to protect their peculiar institution from a man they percieved as a radical abolitionist.
