Ya mercs are pretty damn gay and pretty close to being a game breaker for me. I really like the customization of your characters though. You can start getting AAs at 10 allowing you upgrade the abilities you use more to fit your playstyle. Tradeskilling is definately 100x better. You actually make useful stuff and its interactive. Global ooc is nice and hardcoded teams is ++++. In a way it is like Sullon Zek ruleset in that there are 3 factions, Qeynos (good), Freeport (evil), and Exiles. However Exiles can attack each other as well as the other 2 factions which is pretty interesting. The classes are definately cool. A ranger isnt just a gimp war with low level druid skills, its like its own thing. In a way I feel more like a rogue because i can backstab stuff. eq1 still the best mmo ever but without population it doesnt feel like a mmo.
