It does have pve content at cap level but its not as complex as EQ or even WOW. The game is designed around pvp and thats where it really shines.

The uthgard server is hosted in germany, expect lots of euros playing on it.

Ive been playing on it for some time now. The big thing is that you CANNOT box on the server AT ALL. If someone suspects you of boxing the gms make you do retarded things to prove that your 'girlfriend' is a real life person. This makes the game more challenging cause you cant just 8 box a group to farm rps in pvp or plvl yourself up to cap super fast.

Too bad mythic doesnt just create themselves a true classic server. Ive heard from too many people that they would pay to play a dedicated one but I just dont see it happening.

Hey, Thanks for the reply. I'm interested in trying it out this weekend. Not knowing much, could you answer some questions ?

Is it a hard game to jump into (confusing zones/maps/defined objectives)
Is the game Item based or Skill based ?
Looking over their web page, I see that there 3 different server faction ?(not sure if I have that right ?) is there a better faction to choose ?

DAOC is pretty similar to EQ. There's a bit of a learning curve, but if you're familiar with EQ you should be fine. Classes are a bit more complex than EQ but not by a whole lot. There's some reactive skills and such that make the game a little deeper, which definitely helps the pvp. Leveling is a pain in the ass a lot like EQ, it's not bad 1-40 but the last 10 levels take a ton of grinding. The problem with that is that the PVE is pretty lackluster compared to EQ, so you have to put in the time to get to 50, get your gear and RvR. Gearing up in DAoC isn't as big a deal as EQ, you just got to figure out what you want to use as a set and then farm the pieces, which could take you a week or less if you play a bunch. There's posts on the Uthgard forum that suggest different gear sets for level 50.

Basically the way the game works is that there are three warring realms that each have their own slew of classes. There's a set of "skills" that are distributed evenly among the classes in each realm. The "generic" way to look at it is that Midgard (Nordic) is the melee realm, Hibernia (Irish) is the magic realm, and Albion is the stealth/defensive/well-rounded realm. The class design is really nice in DAOC. For example, the "healer" class of Albion is the Cleric and gets healing/buff/nuke lines. For Hibernia it's the Druid with healing/buff/pet lines. Midgard has the Healer with healing/buff/cc lines. So the realms all sort of have "base" classes but with different specialization lines to make them unique.

So it might take some time to get to 50 and obtain your BIS set, but it's worth it for the RvR, since DAOC is essentially the best pvp mmo.

I have a Skald on Uthgard but I ended up quitting since the two American guilds I was in fell apart. Midgard is hella Germans with a lot of other Europeans mixed in, Americans are sort of hard to find so it's hard to succeed when you play during off-hours.

Later expansions had some raid-ish content, more akin to Sky quests than Vox kills. The emphasis wasn't really on killing big single targets, more groups killing targets for quest items (Trials of Atlantis xpac)

The real 'endgame' was Realm v Realm v Realm. If you haven't played it, it's difficult to really explain the dynamic, but suffice to say the rewards were tangible, like access to dungeons locked out for the other 2 realms, and dmg/exp bonuses. It was fluid. Something like Warhammer Online, but better.

I thoroughly enjoyed that, and I normally hate PvP.

Edit: I might give this a spin, is there a general trend in realm choice for P99'ers?

this uthgard server has a custom raid style zone, i forget what it is called, i think it is call tajendi, but it has some stuff that requires a raid force, although you can use crazy tactics to kill the the stuff with one group, like dying over and over, while you run/kite the mob back to where you respawn lol

I am kind of interested in trying this, but I never played DAOC. Would it be difficult to pick up and figure out the way things work or what?

Bump on this question. I played it for like a day and cant remember anything about it. Also if its all about PvP wasn't Shadowbane considered the premiere game for PvP considering the entire game was ran by players that were sieging eachothers cities and stuff? Or is the end game of DAoC similar to that?

DAOC is and pretty easy game, with few mecanics, speed + skills does help alot in the PvP, how ever you can level up quite easy with groups, soloing is for very few classes, however you dont have to med as long or wait for life as long as EQ, so its posible to solo all the way to 50, however its MUCH faster to have groups of 3-4 or even more, groups range up to 8 and are normaly 2 healers + 1CC and rest DPS.

the thing about DAOC is that allmost all classes have some utility they bring to groups very few classes are "solo" the rogue and archer classes are hard to play up solo, but very rewarding when it comes to PvP content.
