Melee is fine PvE-wise as your first character, it's just gonna suck an enormous cock in PvP for the first month. It's fully possible to level to 40 in banded and with weapons like PGT and dragoon dirk, and then you're high enough level to just quest or camp better stuff. If you have any kind of crew, you can make a melee and have 90-100ish MR in gear that can all be obtained around level 30. Most of the basic resist gear is shit like wolf's eye jewelry, bs mantle and runed bone fork. That'll let you PvP alright, just not the rapefest that you get to enjoy if you roll an easymode mage to begin with. Then again, being the one of the server's 384 mages makes it hard to be proud of anything you achieve.
